Varied scences from the exploits and adventures of the life of Krishna are depicted in this palm leaf engraving, grouped around the central figure of Radha and Krishna, the divine lovers. Prominent amongst them are the miraculous escape from prison and the slaying of the killer elephant. Floral and ornamental borders frame the entire composition in charcoal black.
The specially processed and dried palm leaf is first cut into the required size. Artists from Orissa then engrave the palm leaf with a special iron-stylo. After the illustration is engraved, Lamp Black or powdered Coal is applied on the palm leaf. The engraved portion thus gets filled and highlighted in black line illustrations. Care is taken to remove the excess coal black on the palm leaf.
Each painting contains rows of circles which highlight some of the main illustrations. Circular discs, made out of palm leaf, are stitched over each circle.
