Using a palette of warm, earth colors, a Saura tribal artist of Orissa, recreates the victory celebrations of a Saura chieftain over a rival clan. Drummers and trumpeters lend accompaniment to the singing and dancing by the tribal folk. Two men stand guard over the booty won in the war that is placed before the Chief. Men on horseback and foot-soldiers with their weapons in the backdrop signify the military campaign. Birds and animals are an integral element of Saura paintings as are the geometrical shapes that are used to create bold borders for the center-piece that is invariably drawn in fine lines.
This Saura painting done on canvas is embellished with fine golden paint and encased in a bold and dramatic dark brown wooden frame.
The Sauras are among the oldest tribes of India, going back to the times of the Ramayana and Mahabharata epics. They decorate the walls of their homes with paintings on religious and ceremonial themes and adorn them with motifs of flowers, birds, trees and numerous geometrical shapes and designs. This art-form is mostly found in the Rayagada, Gajapati and Koraput districts of Orissa.
