Bobby Winterman and Eddie Dawson were boyhood friends and are meeting again after many years. Dawson became a priest and through flashback, he is shown babtizing the bastard daughter of a social outcast. To punish him, the Catholic authorities send him to Chelsea where the sexual forthrightness of a wealthy parishioner's daughter troubles his dreams. After publishing a controversial article that once again offends the Catholic heirarchy, he leaves the priesthood only to meet Jenny who gets him a tabloid job and then beds him. Dawson's emotional problems are just beginning as Jenny subsequently takes up with Bobby.
