| One of the most remarkable films in Indian Cinema. A film ahead of its time in its theme and the bold handling of the subject. Based on the book by R. K. Narayan, Indias most known author in the English language, the film broached the subject of a man and a woman living together outside the sanctity of marriage, in the 1960s. With powerhouse performances from Dev Anand (as Raju Guide), and Waheeda Rehman (Rosie), and a powerful vignette from Kishore Sahu (Marco), the film deals with Raju Guide encouraging the frustrated Rosei, a talented dancer, to step out of her destructive and confining marriage to Marco, an archeologist, and become a dancer in her own right. Rosies and Rajus romance, blossoms. In a moment of weakness Raju forges Rosies signature and lands in prison. When he is released, he has nowhere to go. His one act of omission has earned him Rosis wrath. The guide, had lost his way. Filmfare Awards : Best Picture; Best Director Vijay Anand; Best Actor Dev Anand; Best Actress Waheeda Rehman; Best Story R. K. Narayan. National Awards 1965 Certificate of Merit Best Hindi Film |
